Description
The New Illustrated Edition
Ever wanted to know what it’s really like to live in Glastonbury? ‘Normal For Glastonbury: Life in England’s Most Magical Town’ is a book full of insightful, affectionate and often humorous observations and anecdotes from over 30 years of life in England’s most magical (and oddest) town. This new edition features twenty-two delightful and amusing ink pen drawings by Glastonbury artist Debbie De Mornay Penny who was inspired by the stories in the book.
The book paints a vivid picture of the joys and frustrations of living in a place that has attracted pilgrims, free-thinkers and mystics for millennia. Features a colourful cast of witches, hippies, alpacas, vegans and largely tolerant Somerset locals. Besides Debbie’s illustrations, there are some not terribly helpful, but funny, maps. I’ve updated the ever-popular ‘Glastonbury Visitor’s Map’ and you’ll find a full-colour version on the back cover. There’s also an illustrated ABC of Glastonbury, a timeline of significant events in Glastonbury’s history, essays covering social issues and pieces on Glastonbury Festival and its relationship to the Town. Published during the coronavirus pandemic the book also touches on life in Glastonbury in lockdown. Foreword by Glastonbury-based author and educator William Bloom.
I sign each copy ‘Best wishes, Vicki’ on the title page, if you would like me to add a name or particular message please let me know in the notes field when you order.
The paperback is in A5 format, 146 pages. Font is 12 point Vollkorn, which makes it easy to read even for those of us that are a little long sighted…. It’s printed in the UK by St Andrews Press of Wells, on paper from sustainably managed forests approved by the FSC and has a full-colour front cover illustrated by Deborah De Mornay. Please note the text of the book is unchanged from the original, unillustrated edition.
Makes the ideal gift – for an extra £3 I’ll gift wrap the book, add a personalized handwritten label and send it direct to the recipient if you choose, select ‘Add Gift Wrap?’ at the checkout.
International Customers – Although I don’t ship outside the UK, you can order a copy of the original unillustrated paperback from Amazon to wherever you are in the world. Click here for details. These copies are not signed, sorry.

Loved it , it was funny and witty and reflects our own perspective of visiting Glastonbury . Also gives a little insight into what it might be like to live there and the politics that might be involved in living among such a diverse but self believing group of people.

We usually visit Glastonbury for my husband’s birthday but Covid-19 foiled our plans this year. I had seen the book, Normal for Glastonbury advertised and knew this would be the perfect gift for him. Now, at night, the bed jiggles as he giggles away, reading the various stories and recognising various people through the descriptions.

Thanks Katherine, so glad he enjoyed it.

A very wry take on this unique Somerset town. Just the right balance of wit, cynicism and love for the place.

This is a lovely book, a great read, I actually read it in an afternoon as I couldn’t put it down. Sometimes chuckling, laughing out loud and sometimes pensive. Vicki certainly highlights all aspects of Glastonbury, not only all the “love and light” but also the darker aspects you encounter there. A lot of food for thought in this little gem for every Glastonbury lover.
I would definitely recommend this book, Glastonbury-goers will recognize a lot and others will learn a lot about this weird but wonderful old town that is Glastonbury.

I grew up in Glastonbury in the sixties and seventies when it was a different kind of normal. This book beautifully captures the new normal!

That arrived quick! I’ve been following the fb group having moved nearby, and thought I’d buy the book. I can attest that Glastonbury and the surrounding area is truly magnetic… I know the author thinks there’s mad people here and I think she’s mad too having read the book (she seems to think she’s normal 🤣) and frankly long may all that be true forevermore. The light (sunlight/moonlight/light-light) is definitely different here and I hope that the love shines through for you too that are reading this book because, there is no doubt that the author loves this place and so do I.
